What is Oral Cancer?
Oral cancer refers to malignant growths in the mouth or oropharyngeal region. Common sites include:
- Lips and inner lining of lips
- Tongue (especially the lateral edges)
- Floor of the mouth under the tongue
- Gums (gingiva) and alveolar ridge
- Inside of the cheeks (buccal mucosa)
- Roof of the mouth (hard palate)
- Oropharynx (throat region adjacent to the back of the mouth)
Risk factors may include tobacco use (smoking or chewing), heavy alcohol consumption, HPV infection, poor oral hygiene and chronic irritation from ill-fitting dentures or rough teeth. Early detection is key to effective treatment.
Signs & When to Get Evaluated
Early diagnosis improves chances of cure and helps retain better function. If you notice any of the following, book an evaluation at our centre:
Persistent ulcer or sore inside the mouth that does not heal within 2–3 weeks
Red or white patches (leukoplakia / erythroplakia) inside the mouth
Pain, numbness or tingling in the mouth or tongue
Difficulty or pain when chewing or swallowing
A lump or thickening in the neck or inside the mouth
Bleeding from the mouth without obvious cause
Changes in voice, bad breath or loose teeth without explanation
Long-term use of tobacco (smoked or chewed), heavy alcohol intake, or a history of HPV exposure

Yes — with early diagnosis and modern treatment, many patients are cured. Quitting the habit improves outcomes and reduces risk of recurrence.
2. Will I lose my teeth or face shape after treatment?

3. What are common side-effects of treatment?
